Top Ten Photographers to follow on Instagram

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could spend every weekend looking at a famous photographer’s work in a gallery, or checking out the best printed look of their best photos?

Sadly, time, budget and distance are often at odds with us. But we can still get oodles of understanding and inspiration from some of our live photographers by following their Instagram posts

In this article, we’ve compiled our favourite Insta feed from some of the planet’s biggest photographers.

David Bailey

Born and raised in East London, Bailey began photography for Vogue in 1960, and his fashion work with celebrity portrait soon became famous for its strong origins and bright lighting effects, as well as breaking down old and rigid class barriers. Still working at the age of 81, Bailey’s Instagram is a mix of old work and new work, next to the studio photos behind the scenes, as well as images of his daily life.

Steve McCurry 

Born in Philadelphia Steve McCurry is a photographer who is probably best known for his National Geographic work, especially his famous cover photo, ‘Afghan Girl’. He has been a member of Magnum since 1986, having won numerous awards, including Magazine Photographer of the Year, Royal Photographic Society’s Centenary Medal, and two World Press Photo awards.

David LaChapelle

Photographer David LaChapelle has a distinct style that is variously described as ‘hyper-real’, ‘subversive’, ‘surreal’ and ‘kitsch’. A leading figure and influential figure in modern photography, he has won numerous awards and his work comes from public collections around the world.

Bruce Gilden

Well-known street photographer Bruce Gilden has sealed his place in the history of photography with his strategy of shooting the faces of passers-by with a flashgun. A member of Magnum since 1998, he has produced long, detailed photography projects in Haiti, France, Ireland, India, Russia, Japan and England, as well as in his native New York.

Cindy Sherman

Born in New Jersey, Cindy Sherman is an American photographer best known for her sensitive social photos. Originally painting in the style of a super-realist in art school, she turned to photography in the late 1970s to question the deceptive influence of the media about our identity and unity. Therefore, it is often cited as a major influence on modern photographers.

Pete Souza

Born in Massachusetts, Pete Souza is a photographer who worked for the Chicago Tribune’s Washington, D.C. Bureau from 1998 to 2007. He is best known, for being the official White House photographer for two Presidents, Reagan and Obama. A few years ago, he has published two books based on his time with the latter.

Alec Soth

Alec Soth, is an interesting and enlightening combination of images from his deep, long-term projects, and background images that give context. Each one comes with a broad and well-defined definition, so you really feel you are gaining insight into man and his creative process.

Ellen von Unwerth

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, former model Ellen von Unwerth now works as a photographer and director. Specifically in the provocative images of the feminine form that portrays feminist ideology, her work has been published in magazines including Vogue, Vanity Fair and Interview, as well as numerous monographs.

Chris Burkard

Chris Burkard is a California photographer known for his use of natural light and photography when shooting world, lifestyle, wave, outdoor and tourist studies. With commercial clients including Apple, Land Rover, Microsoft and Sony, his work has been published in magazines including GQ, National Geographic, New Yorker, Vogue and Wired.

Ami Vitale

Ami Vitale is an influential photographer and documentary filmmaker. She was born in Montana, a National Geographic photographer, Nikon Ambassador, author, and five-time World Press Photo winner and a founding member of Ripple Effect Images, a global organization of women scientists and creators.

Covering a variety of styles and instructions, each of which is regularly updated, professionally selected, and totally addictive … in a good way, of course!
